Recently, I had shared an Office document link with a client for their review. I sent them a shared link via email, expecting it to open in the online version of PowerPoint. Little did I know that they were frustrated it didnโ€™t open in the desktop app! ๐Ÿ˜…

I get it, while Microsoft Online is a great tool, it lacks some very powerful features found in the desktop app only. Personally, I prefer to have all of shared document links open directly in the app.

So how do you automatically open these shared links in the desktop app? ๐Ÿค”

The solution is quick and easy, but itโ€™s not an obvious one. You just need to make a small change to your settings. Check out below to discover how.

On a MAC

  • Select the PowerPoint menu at the top left
  • Select Preferences
    [or press โŒ˜ ,]
  • Select the General icon
  • Scroll down and make sure the the Link Handling checkbox is activated (see below figure)

On Windows

  • Select the File menu at the top left
  • Select Options
    [or press ALT+F, T]
  • Select the
    Advanced tab
  • Scroll down and make sure the the Link Handling checkbox is activated (see below figure)
